Truth to be told, the Munro MK_1 is not the first electric SUV built specifically for off-road experience. Rivian is already offering the R1S, and Bollinger announced the B1 back in 2017 - although production hasn’t started yet. Now, it is time to meet another contender. It is called MK_1, and it is built by Munro - a British company founded back in 2019. Priced at £49,995, the new Munro MK_1 will arrive at its first customers in 2023. The company already received orders from customers from UK, Switzerland, St Lucia, and Dubai. Initially, production will be limited to 250 units a year, but once Munro will expand from its current headquarters in East Kilbride to a new purpose-built factory in central Scotland, it will be increased to about 2,500 units a year.

The MK_1 will be offered with a single, central-mounted electric motor, with two different levels of power: one delivering 220 kW (295 horsepower) and the other one 280 kW (375 horsepower). The motor works in conjunction with a two-speed transmission and a robust four-wheel-drive system. Customers will also have a choice of two battery packs consisting of 35 state-of-the-art Lithium NMC battery modules and sized 61 kWh and 82 kWh. The biggest one provides a total range of up to 190 miles, and up 16 hours of off-road driving on a single charge. The Munro MK_1 is offered with a choice of two charging options: 100-kW DC charging for juicing the battery from 15 to 80 percent in 36 minutes, or 22-kW AC charging in which case about three hours are needed to go from 15 to 100 percent.

The SUV offers an instant torque of 516 pound-feet at speeds up to 50 mph, which ensures a maximum payload of 2,200 pounds and a towing capacity of 7,716 pounds. In its more powerful 280 kW Performance version, the MK_1 goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and can hit a top speed of 80 mph.

The MK_1 was built on a structural aluminum body-on-frame chassis and the body is mounted to the chassis at eight points. There are different mounting options to choose from, rubber ones for a more comfortable ride or aluminum ones for greater rigidity and strength. It has a ground clearance of 480 millimeters (19 inches) and can wade through water up to a depth of 800 millimeters (31.5 inches). No terrain out there is a challenge for the MK_1 as it comes with an approach angle of 84 degrees, a departure angle of 51 degree and a ramp breakover angle of 148 degrees. Even more, the model is offered with central locking differential standard, while front and rear locking differentials are offered as an option.
